Transferring Your PPL Training to Sherburn: What Documents You Need

Posted 17 Jul 2025

Transferring Your PPL Training

Read below to learn more about how to transfer your training to Sherburn in the quickest way possible.

Restarting your flight training can seem daunting, especially when you have to restart at a new school.

The good news is that you do not have to start from the beginning, and good schools like Sherburn are specifically designed to take on work-in-progress pilots.

Your new instructor will review your previous training records and help you continue from your current level. However, the key is making sure that your previous school transfers your complete training record for a smoother transition.

Read below to learn more about how to transfer your training to Sherburn in the quickest way possible.

List Of Required Documentation

Here are all the documents that you will need to have in person when you transfer to Sherburn from your previous flight school.

  1. Training File

This is the most important document. Your training record or training file should include the following:

  • Training progress summary
  • Lessons completed
  • Exercises completed, such as:
  • Instructor notes and assessments
  • Dates of training flights
  • Instructor signatures/authorisations

With all this information in hand, your instructor will be able to assess your performance correctly and help you build a flight plan accordingly.

Don’t worry about relearning new procedures at a new flight school. Keep in mind that no one expects you to ace everything after you transfer. You will instead be expected to keep a steady pace and get yourself familiarised with the new environment.

  1. Logbook

Your logbook needs to be certified by your previous school. Make sure that you bring your pilot logbook either in paper or electronic form.

You will also need the following in your logbook:

The logbook is the evidence of your flying experience and will be needed for your licence application. So, keep it updated and accurate as much as possible.

  1. PPL Theory Record

If you came far along in your previous school to take exams, then you will need to share your theory exam record as well.

Bring exam certificates, dates passed, and the list of remaining exams. UK PPL theory subjects include 9 subjects, all of which need to be passed with at least 75% marks.

  1. Medical Certificate

Your medical certificate should be verified by the Certified Medical Examiner (CME) at your old school.

You will need to provide your current aviation medical certificate and Class 2 Medical certificate, if applicable.

  1. FRTOL Evidence

If you have completed your radio licence, then make sure you include a copy of your Flight Radio Telephony Operator Licence (FRTOL) and the list of communications exams that you have taken.

The FRTOL course is necessary if you want to expand your aviation training and capabilities, but not having it isn’t a big deal, especially if you are transferring and intend to eventually pursue it later.

If you haven’t reached this step, then you may skip it, but please do mention that you have yet to complete the FRTOL course.

  1. Identity Documents

Of course, you will also need a copy of your passport or photo ID for identification. You may also need to produce proof of identity for future licence paperwork at your new school.

Additional Documents

Here is a list of optional but very useful documents that can help you transition quickly:

  • Previous instructor Details – Including contact details
  • Progress reports – especially the report related to your most recent flight
  • Simulator record – best for applicants who have conducted SIM flights
  • Night Rating Record – especially if you had already started in your previous school
  • Navigation logs – including mock results from your latest tests
  • Any incomplete training paperwork

Important Tasks Before Your First Flight at Sherburn

Before jumping straight into training, we recommend that you ask your new instructors to conduct a document review to see if everything is in order.

You will also need a check flight with an instructor. This will count as a re-assessment flight to see where you stand in your training.

Finally, you will need a new training plan that highlights what remains before your skills test. Don’t worry, you will probably need a few flights to adapt to Sherburn’s fleet, procedures, and local airfield environment, even if your training in these areas was strong.

When you have all these things in order, the faculty at Sherburn Aero Club will immediately identify where you are in the PPL syllabus and help you progress quickly. Sherburn is proud to have a panel of extremely experienced instructors who have hundreds of flight hours under their belt.

Sherburn’s instructors individually focus on each candidate and assess their needs. This enables them to spot the candidate's strengths and work on their weaknesses more efficiently.
